EP.1 The New Rachel
Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) accidentally offends Cassandra July (Kate Hudson), her dance instructor at the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts (NYADA) in New York City, who begins to push Rachel as much as she can. Rachel also befriends upperclassman Brody Weston (Dean Geyer), who helps her adjust to life in the dorm. Rachel later confronts Cassandra about her bullying attitude towards her. To affirm her superiority to Rachel, Cassandra performs a mashup of Lady Gaga's "Americano" with Jennifer Lopez's "Dance Again".
In Lima, Ohio, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) reunites with the returning members of New Directions—Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz), Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris), Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), Sugar Motta (Vanessa Lengies), and Joe Hart (Samuel Larsen)—who have become popular after winning Nationals. He announces that Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) has transferred to William McKinley High School to join New Directions.
Tina, Brittany, Blaine and Wade decide to compete to see who's going to be "The New Rachel" and perform Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" for Artie, who has been asked to choose the winner. He eventually chooses Blaine. McKinley graduate Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) visits cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) to meet her baby daughter, Robin, and is introduced to Sue's new protegé and head cheerleader Kitty (Becca Tobin), who mocks him for not yet being in college.
New Directions holds auditions to select new members for the club. A student who only identifies himself as Jake (Jacob Artist) performs The Fray's "Never Say Never", but becomes angry when he's not allowed to finish the song and storms off. The next candidate, Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist), performs Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind", the same song Rachel performs in a NYADA class, having just seen Carmen Tibideaux (Whoopi Goldberg) cut the first freshman to sing from the program for failing to impress her. Rachel elicits a "nice" from Tibideaux and impresses Brody, who later compliments her and helps her deal with the strangeness of New York and pressure of NYADA. Marley is welcomed into New Directions, but is disappointed when she hears them making fun of an obese lunch lady (Trisha Rae Stahl), whom she reveals is her mother. Sam and New Directions later apologize for their behavior, and their actions motivate Kitty to deem them unpopular once more by slushieing Marley and Unique. Blaine invites Marley to sing lead at the club's next rehearsal.
Blaine performs Imagine Dragons' "It's Time" to encourage Kurt to go to New York and follow his dreams. Kurt soon does, and his father Burt (Mike O'Malley) drives him to the airport, where they share a heartfelt goodbye. Will learns that Jake is actually Noah "Puck" Puckerman's half-brother. He invites Jake to join New Directions, seeing that it helped Puck. Will also explains that he interrupted Jake's performance because he had already seen that Jake was good, but Jake refuses, unwilling to let go of his anger and saying that he is nothing like his half-brother.
Rachel and Kurt reunite in New York, and Kurt suggests they rent a small apartment and move in together, and Marley and New Directions perform Adele's "Chasing Pavements" as Jake looks on.
EP.2 Britney 2.0
In New York City, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) rent a small apartment and move in together. At the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts (NYADA), Rachel continues to be pressured by her dance instructor, Cassandra July (Kate Hudson), who refuses to teach Rachel tango because she thinks she lacks sex appeal. Kurt reveals that Cassandra used to be a promising star on Broadway but wrecked her first performance so dramatically due to pressure that no one wanted to hire her again.
Meanwhile, in Lima, Ohio, Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) performs Britney Spears's "Hold It Against Me" during cheerleading practice before being interrupted by coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), who kicks her off the Cheerios due to her bad grades and replaces her with Kitty (Becca Tobin). This, in addition to the busy schedule of her girlfriend, Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), who is attending University of Louisville, causes Brittany to become depressed. Hoping to cheer her up, guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) convinces glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) to have New Directions performs Britney Spears' songs. Subsequently, Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) and Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) perform a mash-up of "Boys" and Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend", for Brittany, and she is once more inspired by Spears.
New member Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) confides to Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) that she is interested in troublemaker Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), leading to a performance of "Womanizer", during which Jake invites Marley to "hang out". At the bleachers, Marley meets up with Jake and they perform a mash-up of "U Drive Me Crazy" and Aerosmith's "Crazy", as they share a romantic moment. Jake later hears two students mocking Marley and her mother (Trisha Rae Stahl) and confronts them, leading to a fight. Will interrupts the altercation and sends Jake to the choir room, where he's surprised to find his half-brother Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling), who now lives in Los Angeles. Puck introduces himself to Jake and convinces him to join New Directions, so that the experience can help Jake just as it helped Puck.
In New York City, Rachel enlists the help of her friend, NYADA upperclassman Brody Weston (Dean Geyer), to prove to Cassandra that she can be sexy by performing a sultry rendition of "Oops!... I Did It Again"; however, the number fails to impress Cassandra. Rachel accuses her of hating her students because they may have a future in show business, while Cassandra has none, leading an infuriated Cassandra to kick her out of her class. Brody later comforts Rachel and tries to kiss her, but she refuses, as she is still in love with Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith). Brody agrees to respect Rachel's relationship, but admits he has feelings for her. Rachel apologizes to Cassandra and Cassandra allows her to come back to class. Cassandra then reveals that show business is a world with a lot of harsh realities and she wants Rachel and her other students to be prepared for it and that is the reason why she is hard on her students.
In Lima, Ohio, Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) performs an acoustic version of "3" with Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) and Joe Hart (Samuel Larsen). Brittany attempts to shave her head and is stopped by Will, after which she walks into the hallway, only to be provoked by Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman), who she beats up with an umbrella in front of the student body. To cheer Brittany up, New Directions members suggest she should lead the school assembly. Brittany objects that her voice is not up to par, and suggests they lip sync, an idea they rebuke at first, but she manages to convince them. New Directions performs "Gimme More" at the school assembly, but the performance is a disaster due to Brittany's lack of motivation, leading the student body to discover that Brittany was lip-synching to the song. They are booed off of the stage and reprimanded by Will in the choir room. Sam later invites Brittany to meet him at the auditorium, where she admits she staged her breakdown in order to have a more effective comeback, and tells him that she misses Santana. Sam tells Brittany that he will be her friend. Brittany later asks Sue to reinstate her on the Cheerios, and shows some marginal improvements on her grades. Sue agrees on the condition that Brittany's grades continue to improve so she can graduate.
The following day, Jake tells Marley he is going to join New Directions, and learns that he is now dating Kitty. Jake joins New Directions, and an upset Marley performs "Everytime" in the choir room. As this plays, Brittany pines alone in her bedroom for Santana who is offline on iChat, and Rachel paints over a drawing of Finn's name that she had made on her apartment's wall.
EP.3 Makeover
In Lima, Ohio, Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) decides to sign up for the student council presidential election; concurrently, Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) asks Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) to join her ticket, and after Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) becomes disappointed Brittany did not pick him, she sets him up with Blaine as a running mate. When the debates roll around Brittany's speech is completely off the mark, leading to Blaine and Sam being elected.
Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) confides with cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) that he feels as if he has run out of ideas for New Directions. Sue believes that Will has lost his passion for school choir after achieving his dream of leading New Directions to victory in nationals, and advises him to seek for a new project. Will later tells his fiancée, guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), that he is considering joining a blue ribbon government panel to improve on arts education nationwide, and Emma encourages him to follow his dreams.
In New York City, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) is successfully interviewed by Isabelle Wright (Sarah Jessica Parker) for an internship at Vogue.com. Taunted by classmates, Kurt consoles Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), proposing a makeover that will both change Rachel's look and give him a chance to impress Isabelle with his idea of turning a makeover montage into a music video for Vogue.com. Isabelle joins in once she hears that they're giving Rachel a makeover. Vogue.com eventually decides to re shoot the video of Rachel's makeover and use it as the launching point of a new marketing strategy, giving Kurt credit for his contribution. He is asked to sit down in the pitch meetings from now on, and Isabelle tells him that while his ambition in the performing arts is great, he has an aptitude for fashion and should consider it as a career possibility going forward.
Artie's electoral ambitions gets him a date with Sugar Motta (Vanessa Lengies), while Kurt is inadvertently pulling away from Blaine. Distraught, Blaine complains to Sam that now Kurt's not at McKinley anymore nothing seems to have a point, and Sam tries to reassure Blaine of his importance to Kurt and the school.
In New York City, after Rachel shares a duet of Sheryl Crow's "A Change Would Do You Good" with NYADA friend Brody Weston (Dean Geyer), she invites Brody to have dinner. Subsequently, while talking in the living room, Rachel and Brody share their first kiss before being interrupted by a knock on the door. Thinking it is Kurt, Rachel is surprised to see instead her former fiancé Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith).
EP.4 The Break Up
In New York City, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) reunites with her former fiancé, Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), who has been discharged from the Army, and gives him a tour through the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts (NYADA), causing Finn to feel out of place. Meanwhile, in Lima, Ohio, Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), feeling neglected by his boyfriend, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), who is busy with his work at Vogue.com, cheats on him. Finn and Blaine sing Duncan Sheik's "Barely Breathing" and Blaine, feeling guilty, decides to surprise Kurt by visiting him in New York City.
Finn, Rachel, Kurt and Blaine attend a local bar where NYADA students meet, and where Finn runs into Brody Weston (Dean Geyer). Suspicious of his and Rachel's relationship, Finn encourages them to sing Demi Lovato's "Give Your Heart a Break" together. They are followed by Blaine, who performs a heartfelt acoustic version of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." Outside, Finn and Kurt confront Rachel and Blaine, and Rachel admits to kissing Brody, while Blaine admits to cheating on Kurt, leading to them singing No Doubt's "Don't Speak" as they return to Rachel and Kurt's apartment.
The following day, Finn leaves without telling Rachel and returns to Lima, where he visits glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) and breaks down in his arms. Finn is introduced to the new members of New Directions and suggests that they perform Grease for the school musical, which impresses Will. Will later tells his fiancée, guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), that he has been accepted to the blue ribbon government panel to improve arts education nationwide, but that it requires him to move to Washington, D.C. for six months. Emma is reluctant to leave Lima for such a long time to accompany Will, and they argue, but do not break-up.
Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) visits her girlfriend, Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris), and learns that she joined a club created by cheerleader Kitty (Becca Tobin) to prepare for the rapture. Kitty's boyfriend, Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), invites Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) to one of the meetings, but becomes disappointed when Kitty uses it to play a harmful prank on one of the members. Jake eventually decides to break up with Kitty after she mistreats Marley, but also ignores Marley's romantic advances.
Santana serenades Brittany with Taylor Swift's "Mine" and confides with Brittany that their relationship isn't working. She proposes that they have an open relationship, stating they're not really breaking up, which leaves Brittany devastated. Blaine continuously attempts to contact Kurt, but Kurt won't speak to him, and he becomes uncertain of where they're standing.
Rachel, having flown all the way to Lima, confronts Finn at the McKinley auditorium, where she calls him immature and a coward for hiding from her for months. She says she loves him, but states that she can't keep their current relationship up, and she breaks up with him despite Finn's claims that he was giving her freedom. She gives him a last kiss, and leaves. After she leaves, Finn performs Coldplay's "The Scientist" alone, and imagines that Rachel, Kurt, Blaine, Santana, Brittany, Will and Emma are there performing with him.
EP.5 The Role You Were Born to Play
Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) recruits Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), who is working at his stepfather's tire shop and feeling like a failure, to co-direct McKinley High's production of Grease with him. Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) auditions for them, but after singing "Hopelessly Devoted to You", he breaks down and says he can't play Danny, the male lead, since the musical is about love and his relationship with Kurt has been shattered. Finn tells Artie he's not going to direct, because doesn't know what he's doing, but Artie reveals that he's called in help in the form of graduates Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) and Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.), who arrive and join them to help run auditions.
In the girls restroom, Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) and Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) talk about the musical, and Unique reveals she wants to play the female role of Rizzo. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) overhears them and tells Unique that she's a boy, and can't get cast as a female. Marley defends Unique, and later the two audition together, duetting on "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)". When asked what roles they want to play, Marley asks for Sandy, and Unique for Rizzo. Artie is not enthusiastic about the latter casting, but Mercedes praises Unique's voice, and Finn pushes for it.
Without Blaine, there's no good candidate for Danny as Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) prefers to play Kenickie, Joe Hart (Samuel Larsen) refuses to cut his dreadlocks for the part and Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) refuses to audition. Artie reminds Finn that glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) had difficulties to recruit a male lead for New Directions before he found Finn, which gives Finn the idea to ask Coach Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) whether any of the football players might be candidates for the musical. She suggests Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), a sophomore who has recently transferred in. Finn approaches Ryder, who is struggling with his grades, and convinces him that glee club might help improve his studying. Although he is initially reluctant, Ryder later meets Finn at the auditorium, where they perform an impromptu duet of "Juke Box Hero", which turns out to be Ryder's audition song.
Ryder later introduces himself to Marley, since she's also auditioned, and Jake, seeing their encounter and egged on by Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin), decides to audition. To spite Marley, Kitty also auditions, and Jake and her duet on "Everybody Talks", showing off their dance abilities. The directors decide to call back Ryder and Jake for Danny, and Marley and Kitty for Sandy: Mercedes and Mike lead all four of them in singing and dancing "Born to Hand Jive" to test the chemistry between the potential pairings.
Sue objects to Finn's plan to cast Unique as Rizzo, and demands that Will and Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) intervene. Finn stands by his decision, but angers Sue when he refers to her daughter as "retarded". Sue becomes livid when she discovers that Unique was cast as Rizzo despite her objections, and more so after Will asks Finn to take over New Directions for him while he is in Washington, D.C., for three months, working on a blue ribbon government panel to improve arts education nationwide. Finn agrees to take over glee club and the cast list for the musical is announced, with Ryder as Danny, Marley as Sandy, Jake as Putzie and Kitty as Patty Simcox, much to her anger.
Will plans to bring his fiancée, guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), with him to Washington, but she's reluctant to go, and the two bring in Coach Beiste to mediate. Emma agrees to accompany Will, but Beiste realizes she doesn't want to, and later urges Emma to be honest. She finally admits to Will that she wants to stay and work at McKinley, and the two agree to visit each other on weekends while he's away, and to marry once Will has returned.
EP.6 Glease
With the McKinley production of Grease approaching, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) names Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) as interim director of New Directions during his sabbatical in Washington, D.C. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) opposes, citing Finn's age and lack of qualifications, but Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) agrees, which angers Sue. Finn later apologizes to Sue for the insensitive comment he made about her daughter, but she rejects his apologies and declares her truce with the glee club to be over. In order to sabotage the play, Sue reserves the school auditorium for the Cheerios, preventing New Directions from practicing there. Forced to find a new rehearsal venue, he invites the male glee club members to rehearse at Burt Hummel's auto repair shop, where Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner) and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) lead them in a rendition of "Greased Lightnin'".
In New York City, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) tells her friend Brody Weston (Dean Geyer) that she has landed an audition for an off-Broadway production. Though dance instructor Cassandra July (Kate Hudson) attempts to dissuade her, Rachel remains determined and asks Cassandra to audition with her. Later, Rachel and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) discuss whether or not to return to Lima to support their friends in the musical in the wake of their recent breakups with Finn and Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), respectively. Overhearing their discussion, Cassandra convinces them to go and gives her frequent flyer miles to them.
Back at McKinley, Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) surreptitiously tampers with Marley Rose's (Melissa Benoist) costume, and convinces Marley that she is genetically predisposed to be overweight like her mother (Trisha Rae Stahl). Later, during a sleepover at her house, Kitty convinces Marley that she needs to induce vomit in order to maintain a healthy weight, and sings "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee" to mock Marley. Meanwhile, Sue continues her efforts to sabotage the play by convincing the parents of Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) that it is not a good idea for him to perform the female role of Rizzo. However, Sue's plan backfires when Finn enlists Glee club graduate Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) to replace Wade.
Arriving in Lima, Rachel and Kurt have an awkward reunion with Finn and Blaine. Blaine later performs "Beauty School Dropout", followed by Santana, who performs "There Are Worse Things I Could Do". Ryder finds Marley trying to vomit in the bathroom. He convinces her that she looks good and that it is not healthy to induce vomit, and kisses her backstage as Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) looks on. Marley and Ryder sing their rendition of "You're the One That I Want", while Rachel imagines herself performing with Finn and her friends. She calls Brody for support, only to learn that Cassandra has seduced him in order to spite Rachel. Finn finds Rachel crying and attempts to comfort her, however, once he learns she is crying over Brody they decide to sever all ties. Kurt also refuses to speak with Blaine and leaves with Rachel, both claiming that McKinley is no longer their home.
At the choir room, New Directions celebrates the positive reviews of "Grease" and Will says his goodbyes to the glee club before leaving, and Finn officially takes over.
