EP.7 Dynamic Duets

New Directions' nationals trophy is stolen by Hunter Clarington (Nolan Gerard Funk), the new captain of the Dalton Academy Warblers. Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) goes to Dalton to retrieve it. There, Hunter and Sebastian Smythe (Grant Gustin) attempt to convince Blaine to return to the Warblers. After singing Kelly Clarkson's "Dark Side" with them, Blaine becomes conflicted about his future. Meanwhile, interim glee club director Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), struggling to convince New Directions to view him as a leader, takes inspiration from McKinley High's superhero club, which several members of New Directions are part of, to create a week assignment named "Dynamic Duets", in which enemies are forced to work together, in order to prepare the club for Sectionals.

Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) and Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), who have been competing for Marley Rose's (Melissa Benoist) affections, are one of the pairs created by Finn, and serenade Marley with "Superman", but end up getting into a fight in the middle of their performance. Finn then gives them another assignment: To share their deepest fears with one another. Jake eventually admits that he feels insecure over being mixed-race and jewish, while Ryder admits that he cannot read properly. Jake tells Finn about this, and Finn convinces Ryder to take a test, revealing that Ryder is dyslexic. He is directed to a professional and begins treatment to improve his studying.

Jake and Ryder become friends, and Ryder later defends Jake from jocks who were planning to beat him up. Conflicted about his feelings for Marley, knowing that he previously turned down her advances and that Ryder is now interested in her, Jake calls his half-brother Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling), who is working as a street performer in Los Angeles, for advice. Puck advises Jake to not give up on Marley, but to play it cool for now and let her come to him. Later, Puck's advice pays off, as Ryder is forced to cancel a date with Marley for a dyslexia treatment. Marley, empowered by her new alter ego Woman Fierce, marches over to Jake and sets up a date with him.

Marley is paired with Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin), who convinces Marley that she is losing weight in order to further Marley's bulimia. Kitty pretends to become Marley's friend and they sing "Holding Out for a Hero". However, Kitty's plans backfire when Marley, feeling empowered by the assignment, decides to go out with both Ryder and Jake.

Believing that he doesn't belong in New Directions after cheating on his boyfriend Kurt Hummel, Blaine decides to transfer to Dalton and rejoin the Warblers. Upon learning of this, Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) convinces him that, despite having done a bad thing, Blaine is still a good person and an important member of New Directions. After performing several good deeds throughout the school, Blaine and Sam sing David Bowie's "Heroes" and Blaine decides to stay at McKinley. They return to Dalton one more time and steal back their trophy.

Having succesfully brought the glee club closer with his assignment, Finn is embraced by New Directions as a competent director. They later do a group performance of "Some Nights" in the school auditorium as Finn looks on.

EP.8 Thanksgiving
Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.) and Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling) return to Lima to celebrate Thanksgiving and join interim glee club director Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) in a mash-up performance of "Homeward Bound" and "Home" in the school auditorium. Afterwards, Finn asks each of the graduates to mentor one of the new members of New Directions in order to prepare for Sectionals, which will once again be held at McKinley.

Mike is partnered with Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), Puck is partnered with his brother, Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), Mercedes is partnered with Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell), Quinn is partnered with Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) and Santana is partnered with Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist). In order to beat their rivals, the Dalton Academy Warblers, known for their elaborate dance choreographies, Finn decides to have New Directions perform "Gangnam Style".

Ryder agrees to no longer romantically pursue Marley now that she is dating Jake. In return, Jake helps Ryder be selected as one of the number's lead dancers alongside Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), despite being a better dancer than Ryder. Meanwhile, Kitty convinces Quinn, whom she idolizes, that Jake is pressuring Marley into having sex with him. Quinn becomes hostile towards Jake, partially due to her previous experience with Puck.

Quinn, Santana and Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) perform "Come See About Me" for the female members of New Directions, reminding them to use their strengths in the competition. After the performance, Santana confronts Quinn about having discovered that Kitty has given Marley laxatives in order to further Marley's bulimia. Quinn, who is dating one of her teachers at Yale, accuses Santana of being jealous of her and projecting her hostility in their surrogates, leading to a fight before Quinn storms out of the choir room.

In New York City, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) confronts Brody Weston (Dean Geyer) over having sex with Rachel's enemy, dance instructor Cassandra July. Brody reminds Rachel that she ignored him once Finn briefly appeared in NYC, and recognizing her mistake, she invites him to celebrate Thanksgiving with her and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), who also invites his boss, Isabelle Wright (Sarah Jessica Parker). Isabelle brings her friends to Rachel and Kurt's apartment, where they end up having a party, performing a mash-up of "Let's Have a Kiki" and "Turkey Lurkey Time". Isabelle advises Kurt to call his ex-boyfriend Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), and they have a heartfelt conversation, in which Kurt agrees to meet during Christmas to decide what will become of their relationship.

At Sectionals, the Warblers, led by Hunter Clarington (Nolan Gerard Funk) and Sebastian Smythe (Grant Gustin), perform "Whistle" and "Live While We're Young". Meanwhile, Marley begins to feel sick due to starvation and anxiety. Hoping to relieve the pressure, Ryder agrees to give up the lead dancer position to Jake, and New Directions successfully performs, with Finn, Quinn, Santana, Mercedes, Mike, Puck, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) and cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) in the audience. However, Marley collapses on the stage a second before their first song is finished.

EP.9 Swan Song


Immediately after her collapse onstage at Sectionals, the glee club helps Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) backstage. Unknown to the glee club at the time, leaving the stage in the middle of a performance is grounds for disqualification, and despite Will Schuester's (Matthew Morrison) efforts to get New Directions to return to the stage, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) informs them that they have been disqualified and the Dalton Academy Warblers have been declared the winners of Sectionals. With New Directions' performance season over, Sue claims the choir room and auditorium for her own use, leaving the glee club without a practice venue, but confides to Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter) that she considers it an empty victory. Interim director Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) tries to rally the glee club members to prepare for the upcoming holiday concert, but the entire club is dejected and points out to Finn that several members are seniors and do not have a "next year" to make another run at Nationals; Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) in particular blame Marley for their loss. As a result of the glee club's performance season ending early, most of the club members take up other extracurricular activities. The loss also spurs Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) and Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) to express their feelings for each other.

In New York, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) prepares for his second NYADA audition, and dean Carmen Tibideaux (Whoopi Goldberg) hands Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) a highly-coveted invitation to perform at the Winter Showcase. Dance teacher Cassandra July (Kate Hudson) believes that Rachel is not ready to perform at Winter Showcase, and the two have a dance showdown to "All That Jazz" from Chicago. Rachel realizes that she is not as good a dancer as Cassandra, and chooses to focus on singing for her Winter Showcase performance. Kurt visits Carmen's office and inquires about his second audition; she is highly critical of the audition and tells him that he is not suited for NYADA. At the Winter Showcase, Rachel performs "Being Good Isn't Good Enough" and "O Holy Night", receiving standing ovations after both songs. After Rachel's performance, Carmen surprises everyone by saying that the next performance will be Kurt's audition for NYADA. Rachel helps a panicked Kurt calm down and decide on a song to perform; he performs "Being Alive" from Company and also receives a standing ovation. Rachel ends up winning the Winter Showcase, and Kurt gets admitted to NYADA.

Rachel calls Finn, who is dejected after having cleared the glee club's trophies from the choir room and seeing the glee club break up. Finn confides that he feels like a failure after all that has happened. After reflecting on their mutual experiences with the glee club, she tells him to never give up on his dreams. Marley – the only student who remained committed to the glee club – tells Finn that she has found a new rehearsal space: the steps outside the school. Finn asks the other glee club members to meet there. When only Marley shows up at the appointed time, Finn and Marley begin singing "Don't Dream It's Over", but they are slowly joined by the other glee club members.

EP.10 Glee, Actually

Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) injures himself on an icy wheelchair ramp at McKinley High. Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) helps him to the school nurse's office, where Artie tells Finn he wishes that the accident that paralyzed him had never happened. Artie falls asleep in the nurse's office and enters a dream sequence. In the dream, as explained by his guide Rory Flanagan (Damian McGinty), Artie was never paralyzed and as a result many of the events as he knows them never took place. The glee club never got off the ground, and Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) has become an apathetic drunk under the control of his wife, Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig). Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) is bullied by jocks – including several of the glee club members – because of his homosexuality, and as a result never graduated from high school. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) works as a librarian in the school library, having never had a chance to be a star. Artie gathers the glee club as he knows it and performs "Feliz Navidad" in an attempt to inspire them to establish a glee club, but fails. Last, Rory informs Artie that Quinn Fabray (Diana Agron) never managed to recover from her car accident, which happened regardless since "Quinn texts and drives in every timeline" and, since she didn't have the support of her friends, died of a broken heart. Rory explains to Artie that wheelchair-bound Artie is the heart and soul of the glee club, and Artie wakes up from the dream with a better appreciation of his role in the club.

Burt Hummel (Mike O'Malley) surprises Kurt and Rachel by showing up at their New York apartment. Burt explains to Rachel the significance of Christmas in Kurt's life, especially after the death of Kurt's mother. Rachel goes on a cruise, while the Hummels continue to bond in New York. Burt reveals to Kurt that he has prostate cancer, but it was diagnosed at an early stage and his chances for survival are very high. Burt then surprises Kurt again by revealing that he has paid for Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) to travel to New York to spend Christmas with them. They have an awkward but cordial reunion, and sing "White Christmas". Back at the apartment, Burt, Kurt, and Blaine continue several of the Hummels' Christmas traditions, and have dinner.

Puck (Mark Salling) invites Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) to travel to Los Angeles with him. Puck tries to impress Jake with the lifestyle he lives in Los Angeles, but when the actual owner of the house where Puck told Jake he had been living returns home and kicks them out, Puck admits he has been lying about his lifestyle. The brothers return to Lima and later have a Hanukkah dinner at BreadstiX, together with their respective mothers. The dinner goes badly at first, as the two women resent each other, but Puck and Jake convince their mothers that all four of them have a common bond: they were all placed into a difficult situation by the same man. The women begin to talk and soon start to bond. Puck informs Jake that he will be staying in Lima, while he works on a screenplay.

Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) reveal to each other that they believe in the 2012 Mayan apocalypse. Believing that the world is about to end, Brittany cashes out her savings and gives her friends expensive gifts, and Sam proposes to Brittany. Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) performs the wedding ceremony. When the apocalypse does not occur as expected, Sam and Brittany realize that they are still married, and meet Coach Beiste at BreadstiX to ask for help. Beiste reveals that she is not actually qualified to perform weddings, and that they are not officially married. The reason she did this because she didn't want them to get really married. Both Brittany and Sam are disappointed that the world didn't end and during this time thinking it would, they felt good being nice to others. As a result, Beiste quickly come up with a story on her phone that an archaeologist named Indiana Jones have found evidence the world would end in 2014, much to the teenagers' delight, believing they have time to tell everyone how they feel.

After failing to satisfy Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter) with her Christmas gifts, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) draws Millie Rose's (Trisha Rae Stahl) name in a Secret Santa event held among the McKinley High faculty and staff. Unsure what to get Millie, Sue happens upon a conversation between Millie and her daughter Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist). Marley wants to have a Christmas tree and at least some gifts, but Millie explains that they need to save money to pay a counselor to treat Marley for her eating disorder. After seeing this, Sue breaks into the Roses' home that night and surreptitiously leaves them a Christmas tree, several presents, and enough money to pay Marley's counselor. Becky reveals to Millie that Sue was behind the surprise, and Millie attempts to return the money, but Sue refuses to accept it. Millie then brings Sue to the auditorium, where several of the glee club members including Marley sing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", joined in unison by the four glee clubbers singing in BreadstiX and the two singing in the New York apartment.

EP.11 Sadie Hawkins

Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) convinces Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) to organize a Sadie Hawkins dance at McKinley to empower the female students. Glee club director Finn Hudson (Corey Monteith) decides to have the female members of New Directors perform to the people they want to invite to the dance, and Tina sings "I Don't Know How to Love Him" for Blaine, having developed a crush on him. However, Blaine declines her invitation, having himself developed a crush on Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), who is investigating the possibility whether the Dalton Academy Warblers cheated at Sectionals.

In New York City, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) joins the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts (NYADA), and with Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) occupied with her relationship with Brody Weston (Dean Geyer), Kurt decides to join NYADA's glee club, the Adam's Apples, to make new friends. Rachel tells Kurt not to, as it would be "social suicide", although Kurt becomes interested in the club's captain, Adam Crawford (Oliver Kieran-Jones), who impresses him with a performance of Jonathan Coulton's cover of "Baby Got Back". Kurt later asks Adam out on a date.

In Lima, Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) convinces Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) to invite Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) to the dance with a performance of "Tell Him", but Jake becomes divided when Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) also invites him. His brother, Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling), convinces him to go with Marley and ends up going with Kitty himself. Meanwhile, Blaine confides with Tina about his crush on Sam, and they decide to go together as friends.

At the dance, the guys of New Directions perform "No Scrubs", followed by the girls' performance of "Locked Out of Heaven". There, Sam reveals to Blaine and Finn evidence that he has acquired that Warblers captain Hunter Clarington (Nolan Gerard Funk) had the Warblers use steroids to enhance their performance, which Finn decides to use against the Warblers.

Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner) ends the dance with a performance of "I Only Have Eyes for You" while Jake and Marley begin a relationship. Rachel invites Brody to move in with her.

EP.12 Naked

The Dalton Academy Warblers are exposed for using steroids for their participation in Sectionals, and New Directions is given another chance to compete in Regionals. To raise money for the bus, Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) successfully proposes they make a sexy "Men of McKinley" calendar with the male members of the New Directions.

Meanwhile, in New York City, Rachel is asked to star in a student film, but becomes conflicted when she learns the role requires her to be topless. After singing "Torn", Rachel decides to go through with it. Although her boyfriend Brody Weston (Dean Geyer) supports her, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) does not agree with her decision and calls Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) and Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) to convince Rachel not to do it, but Rachel remains decided.

In Lima, Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) informs Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) that she had excellent grades in her SATs, but her boyfriend Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) had a terrible score. Sam becomes convinced that he can only rely on his body to be successful, and through a mash-up of "Centerfold" and "Hot in Herre", pushes the guys of New Directions for the calendar, causing conflict with Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), who is uncomfortable with his body. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) tries to stop the calendar from being released, but Finn blackmails her with her own nude photoshoot for Penthouse magazine.

Brittany also convinces Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) to declare her feelings for Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist). They duet on "A Thousand Years", but Marley cannot bring herself to say it. Advised by Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), Jake then declares his feelings through a performance of "Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself)", and Marley reciprocates his feelings. Meanwhile, Blaine convinces Sam to stop pushing himself so hard, and, with help from guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), selects colleges that do not require good SAT scores.

In New York City, Rachel eventually decides not to do the topless scene and thanks Quinn and Santana for their support. They perform "Love Song" together, and Santana voices her interest in moving to New York City. Meanwhile, in Lima, Sam apologizes to Artie for his actions, and convinces Tina to change the themes of the calendar so Artie can pose without having to be nude. They then join the others in a performance of "This Is the New Year".
