Glee Season 5

EP.1 Love Love Love

In New York City, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) attends a chemistry reading for Funny Girl, but fails to impress the producers, and sings "Yesterday" in frustration. Meanwhile, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) gives New Directions to a two-week assignment covering The Beatles, with the first week focusing on their early years. Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) serenades Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) with "Drive My Car" and invites her to a carnival, where their relationship blossoms. They are seen together by a new cheerleader, Bree (Erinn Westbrook), whom Kitty realizes is trying to sabotage her. She then asks Artie to keep their relationship a secret to preserve her popularity, which he reluctantly agrees to.

Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) returns to McKinley High after Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter) confesses that the gun that misfired in the school was hers, and Sue lied to protect her. Craving for power, Sue frames Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) of possessing unsuitable material. Figgins is then demoted to janitor, while Sue replaces him as interim principal, and schemes to receive the full-time job by ensuring all extracurricular clubs win in their respective competitions. She then informs Will and cheerleading coach Roz Washington (NeNe Leakes) that they are both obligued to win Nationals in their respective fields, or be fired.

Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) and Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) rekindle their relationship with a performance of "Got to Get You into My Life", and Blaine decides to move forward with his plan to propose to Kurt. Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) eventually finds out about Artie and Kitty's relationship and attempts to convince Artie to go public with the relationship, but he refuses, performing "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away".

Blaine and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) rally New Directions, Vocal Adrenaline, the Dalton Academy Warblers and the Havenbrook Deaf Choir to help Blaine's proposal through a performance of "Help!", while, in New York, Rachel begins working as a waitress in a singing Broadway diner with Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) in order to make ends' meet and gain life experience. The Funny Girl producers show up one day, and Rachel seizes a second chance to impress them by singing "A Hard Day's Night" with Santana. They then return to Lima after receiving a message from Blaine.

In Lima, Tina attempts to expose Artie and Kitty's relationship, motivating Kitty to announce their relationship. Blaine becomes concerned by Tina's bitterness and recruits Sam, Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) and Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner) to cheer her up through a performance of "I Saw Her Standing There". Tina is then given the opportunity to choose Blaine, Sam or Ryder as her date for prom, and goes for Sam.

Burt Hummel (Mike O'Malley) drives Kurt to Dalton Academy, and Kurt reveals he knows about Blaine's proposal, and doesn't know what to do. Burt tells him to balance the pros and the cons, and always remember that life is short. At Dalton, Blaine serenades Kurt with "All You Need Is Love", accompanied by the four glee clubs, and with Rachel, Santana and Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) in attendance. Blaine then proposes, and Kurt agrees to marry him as everyone cheers on.

EP.2 Tina in the Sky with Diamonds

New Directions continues their two-week assignment covering The Beatles. Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) is nominated for prom queen at the new combined all-grades prom and is determined to win, dumping Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet)—who she had previously accepted as her prom date—to capitalize on the potential votes of girls without dates, and belitting her assistant and campaign manager, Dottie Kazatori (Pamela Chan). Although she is also nominated, Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) decides to support Tina. Upon learning of this, Bree (Erinn Westbrook) campaigns for Kitty, a fellow Cheerio, without her consent and ropes Dottie into a scheme to humiliate Tina at prom.

At NYADA, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) performs "Get Back" to cheer up Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), who is depressed by her disappointing "chemistry" audition for Funny Girl. At the diner where Rachel and Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) work, one of their co-workers, Dani (Demi Lovato), is interested in Santana; the interest is mutual, though scary for Santana, and Rachel gives her a pep talk before making herself scarce at the end of an overnight shift. Dani and Santana perform "Here Comes the Sun" and, after walking through the city, they share a kiss.

Principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) hires med student Penny Owen (Phoebe Strole) to become McKinley High's nurse, and Sam develops a crush on her, singing "Something". When Sue decides to fire Penny for incompetence, Sam overcomes his fear of needles and allows Penny to give him a meningitis shot, and later praises her to Sue, who reverses her decision.

At prom, Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist), Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) and Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) perform "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Afterwards, Sue announces Tina and Stoner Brett (Ryan Heinke) as prom queen and prom king. On Bree's command, Dottie reluctantly drops a bucket of red slushie on Tina while she's on stage, and she exits in tears. New Directions follows her to the choir room, where they sing "Hey Jude" and encourage Tina to face the crowd and go back. She does so, receiving her much-awaited standing ovation.

Rachel is surprised at the diner by Mr. Campion (Peter Facinelli), the Funny Girl director, who tells her she has been cast as Fanny Brice. In Lima, cheerleading coach Roz Washington (NeNe Leakes) informs Sue that Bree is behind the prank and demands that she is punished. Sue instead promotes Bree to captain of the Cheerios and encourages her to torment New Directions as much as she can, in order to toughen them up in preparations for Nationals. Rachel, Kurt, Santana, Dani perform "Let It Be" in celebration of Rachel's achievements, while New Directions does the same song in honor of Tina.

EP.3 The Quarterback

The episode opens on members of New Directions, past and present, singing "Seasons of Love" at Finn's funeral. Three weeks later, everyone has gathered again at McKinley High as Will states that he would like the group to honor Finn in song as their own personal memorial to him. Mercedes performs "I'll Stand By You", remembering the time he sang it to Beth's sonogram when he thought he was going to be a father. Later, Sue speaks with Kurt and informs him that the tree he had planted for Finn had been stolen. As he returns home, he helps his parents to sort Finn's belongings, keeping Finn's jacket and giving Burt Finn's lamp and football. Carole soon breaks down in grief and the family comes together to comfort one another.

The next day, the glee club meets in the auditorium as Sam and Artie lead them in "Fire and Rain". Santana leaves early and visits Finn's memorial at his old locker, where she sees Bree start to take it apart at Sue's orders. Santana goes to confront Sue in her office and accuses Sue of her hatred towards Finn, shoving her into a bookcase in anger. Shocked, Santana quickly leaves. Later, Emma speaks to Will and it is revealed that he hasn't cried since Finn died. Will assures her he's okay and returns to class.

Santana decides to sing "If I Die Young" and breaks down crying halfway through the song, rushing out of the choir room. Kurt finds her in the auditorium and talks to her. She is upset that she couldn't bring herself to say the nice things she had intended to about Finn and starts crying when Kurt says that Finn cared about her and knew she was good inside. Kurt leaves at her request, placing Finn's jacket around her shoulders.

Puck finds his way into the locker room where Coach Beiste notices he's drunk and confronts him about his feelings over Finn's death. Puck reveals that he is scared that, without Finn's guidance, he will resort to being a thug. Beiste tells him that Puck has to trust that Finn's memory and his own instincts will be enough to guide him from here on. She also reveals that she knows he was the one who stole Finn's tree and he promises to return it. Later, he sings "No Surrender" as his tribute to Finn before Santana accuses him of stealing Finn's jacket, though Puck denies this.

The members of New Directions gather to place drumsticks on Finn's memorial as Rachel returns to see it. Back in the choir room, she sings "Make You Feel My Love" in honor of Finn. Santana apologizes to Sue, who reveals that she is sad that Finn died thinking she hated him as she was actually fond of him and looking forward to having him as a colleague. Santana also speaks to Will and tells him that she doubts she will return to Lima as it is filled with painful memories for her. Will says she's proud of her for leaving the nest. Puck replants the tree with Beiste and tells her he is leaving for the military as it will "take an army" to keep him on the right track without Finn. Beiste wishes him luck and tells him to be safe.

Finally, Rachel speaks to Will alone in the choir room and speaks to him about how she is uncertain of what the future will hold without the man she loved. She offers Will a plaque with Finn's picture and a quote of his. Later at home, Will is revealed to be the one who stole Finn's jacket and finally allows himself to cry. Emma comes home and sees him weeping as he holds Finn's jacket and she comforts her husband as he grieves.

EP.4 A Katy or a Gaga

This episode starts when Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) announces that the main competition in Nationals is Throat Explosion, and divides the glee club between those who identify themselves with Katy Perry and those who identity themselves with Lady Gaga. He then instructs each group to perform a song from the other group's inspiration, in order to strengthen their weak points.
In New York, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) recruits Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) and Dani (Demi Lovato) to his band, and schedules auditions at NYADA. The only applicant is Elliot Gilbert (Adam Lambert), an overtly bold performer who calls himself "Starchild" and impresses Santana and Dani with a rendition of "Marry the Night", but is rejected by Kurt, who fears Starchild might be too edgy for what he hopes is a mainstream band. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) later tells Kurt he shouldn't change his artistic views to adapt to expectations, and Kurt reconsiders his decision and invites Starchild to join the band. Kurt also convinces a reluctant Rachel to join the band, which she names "Pamela Landsbury".
In Lima, Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) is surprised to find out that Penny Owen (Phoebe Strole) has an unlikely appreciation for bad boys, and takes over the Gaga assignment in hopes of showing her a different side of himself. Meanwhile, Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) becomes frustrated with his relationship with Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist). Bree (Erinn Westbrooke) invites him to help her choreograph a dance routine for the Cheerios, and Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) becomes concerned Jake might become attracted to her. Marley refuses to change for Jake and joins Sam, Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) and Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner) for a performance of "Applause" dressed as Katy Perry. The number turns out disappointing, and Will suspends Marley from glee club for a week for breaking the rules of the assignment.
Penny confesses to Sam that she doesn't really like bad boys, and only dates them to prove to herself that she is not a boring person, but she likes Carrie Underwood, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry. Sam confesses he has similar interests and they kiss, and even more importantly, he takes her to the auditorium to watch Jake, Unique, Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) and Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) perform a stripped-down version of "Wide Awake". Jake later convinces Marley to dress up like Katy Perry for him, but they get into a fight when Marley claims she is not yet ready to have sex with him. The following day, Jake seduces Bree and they have sex in the school grounds. Bree also informs Principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) of the assignment, and Sue suspends the entire glee club for a week for dressing inappropriately on school grounds. Will refuses to back down to Sue despite her new position, and New Directions later meets at the auditorium, where they defiantly perform "Roar", and Kurt's band, Pamela Landsbury, follows suit, and the episode ends.

EP.5 The End of Twerk

Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) decides to have New Directions twerk in Nationals to "edge up" their performance, and recruits Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) and Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) to teach the dance to the rest of the group. Meanwhile, Wade "Unique" Adams is caught using the girls' bathroom by Bree (Erinn Westbrooke), and is forced to use the boys' bathroom from then on.
In New York, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) rehearses "You Are Woman, I Am Man" from Funny Girl with her co-star, Paolo San Pablo (Ioan Gruffud), and surprises the director, Rupert Campion (Peter Facinelli), by wearing a wig during the performance, which he agrees fits the character. Rachel later tells Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) how it was positive for her to rebel a bit after Finn Hudson's death, and convinces Kurt that they should both get tattoos.
In Lima, Principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is appalled by Will's assignment and bans twerking from McKinley High. Will refuses to accept this and performs "Blurred Lines" with New Directions and other students, misunderstanding the meaning of the song. Sue fires him, but he appeals to the school board by showing how several dances were, in their time, considered as controversial as twerking, and is reinstated.
Unique is bullied while using the boys' bathroom and sings "If I Were a Boy" in frustration. She later asks Sue for a unisex bathroom, and Sue places a port-a-potty in the middle of the choir room to get back at Will. He then volunteers to let Unique use the faculty bathroom every time she needs. Upon learning of this, Sue offers to give Unique her own key if Will ends the twerking assignment and cancels his plans to have them do it at Nationals, and Will grudgingly accepts Sue's proposal.
In New York, Kurt is horrified to find out his tattoo is wrong, and that Rachel didn't get hers. He later confronts the tattoo artist (Bradford Tatum), who reveals Kurt misspelled it. He offers to fix it free of charge in order to motivate Kurt to not stop taking risks, and Kurt ends up getting a tongue piercing as well. Unbeknownst to him, Rachel did, in fact, get a tattoo, which spells "Finn".
In Lima, Bree tells Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) that she had sex with Jake. Marley confronts Jake and breaks up with him when he confirms he has cheated on her with Bree. A heartbroken Marley then sings "Wrecking Ball" in the auditorium. The following day, Will tells to the club about his deal with Sue, and announces he has a found a perfect song for them to perform, which fits their style. At the end of the episode, to wrap it up, New Directions then gathers in the auditorium to perform "On Our Way".

EP.6 Movin' Out

Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) finds out that Principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) has organized a career fair at McKinley High, but refused to include any arts-related booths, as she believes pursuing a career in the entertainment industry will likely result in failure. Will is forced to admit that the show business is a very difficult professional area, and assigns New Directions to perform songs by Billy Joel, due to his notorious struggle to reach stardom.
Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) perform "Movin' Out" before traveling to New York to scout potential colleges while staying with Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) and Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera). Later, at the Spotlight Diner, Kurt encourages Blaine to perform as training for his NYADA audition, and Blaine sings "Piano Man" to much acclaim. However, he becomes hesitant to audition for NYADA, a college purely focused on the arts, until Kurt reassures him he will find success pursuing his passion.
In Lima, Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist) attempts to apologize to Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) for cheating on her, but she rejects him. Angry, Jake decides to embrace his lifestyle as a womanizer and sings "My Life" to Marley. Noticing that Jake has hurt her, Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner) asks Marley out, and later serenades her with "An Innocent Man", convincing her to accept his offer. Meanwhile, Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) notices Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter) observing the booths of the career fair and attempts to encourage her to attend college, but is rebuffed by Sue, who wants to keep Becky safe in McKinley as her secretary. Wanting to help Becky, Artie sings "Honesty" to her and later takes her on a tour of the University of Cincinnati, which has a program for students with special needs. Sue consents to the idea and later encourages Becky to attend college, realizing she is ready.
In New York, Sam has a disastrous interview for a scholarship, and later confides in Rachel that he doesn't want to go to college and his dream is to become a male model. Rachel sets up a photoshoot in the loft and makes Sam a portfolio, which he submits to a prestigious modeling agent, Bichette (Tyra Banks). Although she is interested in adding him to her roster, she insists that he loses 10 pounds. Sam initially attempts to do so, but Rachel, Blaine, Kurt and Santana talk him out of it and, through a performance of "Just the Way You Are", convince Sam to scout other modeling agencies.
In Lima, Ryder is excited over the prospect of having a relationship with Marley, but she claims to still be recovering from her break-up with Jake and that she is not ready for a new relationship, leaving Ryder disappointed. Jake teases the two about their budding relationship and flaunts his multiple partners to Marley. Sam and Blaine return after Blaine successfully auditions for NYADA and tell Sue that she is wrong about pursuing a career in the arts. Emboldened by their success, and by ending this day, Will leads New Directions and the entire student body in a performance of "You May Be Right".

EP.8 Puppet Master

Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) is caught up with the school board's upcoming inspection of McKinley High and instructs the New Directions to brainstorm ideas for Nationals while he is unavailable. Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) makes several suggestions that highlight him, and becomes offended when the others, aside from Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), reject his ideas and accuse him of being controlling. Blaine then calls Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), who warns Blaine not to force his ideas upon the others and become a puppet master. Kurt also reveals he booked Pamela Lansbury's first gig at Callbacks, which Blaine promises to attend. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), Dani (Demi Lovato) and Elliott "Starchild" Gilbert (Adam Lambert) disagree over the choice of venue, but are convinced by how Kurt envisions their first performance, in which they sing "Into the Groove".
The school board visits McKinley ahead of the inspection to discuss with Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) the possibility of becoming full-time Principal, to which she agrees. She develops a crush on Superintendent Bob Harris (Christopher Cousins), and is disappointed to find out he thinks she is a man. Sue confides in Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter) that she changed her more feminine appearance and adopted her trademark tracksuits when she started working at McKinley, in order to be respected by the students. Becky then encourages Sue to embrace her femininity.
Blaine refuses to perform due to the New Directions' treatment of him and sits in the back of the choir room. Due to a gas leak, he hallucinates that his friends are puppets who idolize him, and leads them in a rendition of "You're My Best Friend". Blaine later thanks Jake for supporting him and mentions the back of the choir room. Jake continues to choreograph the Cheerios' dance routines, and upsets Bree (Erinn Westbrooke) by bragging about having sex with the entire cheerleading squad. Will wants Jake to create a dance number for Nationals, but he refuses, claiming the glee club is not up to par with his talents. He then hallucinates performing a mash-up of "Nasty" and "Rhythm Nation". Shortly afterwards, Bree tells Jake she is pregnant and wants him to accompany her to the doctor's appointment.
Will offers to help Sue in exchange for additional money for the New Directions' Nationals wardrobe, but Sue refuses. While in the choir room, she hallucinates performing "Cheek to Cheek" with Will. Sue also confiscates a puppet of Kurt that Blaine made in crafts class, and sends him to detention after he breaks into her office after hours to retrieve it, which prevents Blaine from attending Kurt's performance. They get into a brief argument when Kurt finds out about the puppet, and Pamela Lansbury is later disappointed to discover the only person in their audience is a misguided old man hoping to meet Angela Lansbury.
Blaine, Jake and Becky meet in detention, and Blaine covers for Jake while he prepares to take Bree to the hospital. Bree, however, announces she just had a pregnancy scare. Jake is relieved, but Bree warns him his lifestyle will have unwanted consequences, and cuts ties with him due to his bad influence. Moved by her words, Jake apologizes to Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) for his behavior and tries to make amends with her. Though Marley harbors no ill feelings for him, she confesses she now only views him as a friend and leaves him heartbroken.
Sue recruits Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) to help her, and impresses the school board, even fixing the gas leak. They promote her to full-time Principal, and Sue asks Harris out on a date, but he still refuses. Simultaneously, Kurt announces that the old man from their audience happened to be the uncle of a scout, who has booked them a second gig at a popular nightclub. As an apology, Blaine crafts puppets of all of his friends and presents them. To end this episode, The New Directions and Pamela Lansbury then simultaneously sing "The Fox".

EP.9 Previously Unaired Christmas

This very special Christmas edition starts when Jane Lynch addresses the audience to explain that the original 2012 Christmas episode of Glee was banned for being too offensive, but fan complaints have convinced Fox to air a severely edited version.
In 2012, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) selects Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) and Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) to create New Directions' entry for McKinley High's annual tree decorating contest, and Tina becomes obsessed with winning the grand prize, an angel sculpture. Later, football coach Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) announces that the school's nativity scene has been defaced, and Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) has asked the Christmas Club, which all of New Directions is a part of, to participate of a living nativity. Tina, Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) and Wade "Unique" Adams (Alex Newell) compete for the role of Virgin Mary, and invite Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin) to audition with them, but she refuses.
In New York, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) are visited by Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), still recovering from her break-up with Brittany Pierce. Rachel gets a job as a Holiday elf at a shopping mall, and convinces Kurt and Santana to join them. However, the mall Santa (M.C. Gainey) turns up drunk and refuses to interact with the impatient crowd. After failing to stall them with a performance of "Here Comes Santa Claus", Rachel and Kurt convince Santana to dress up as Mrs. Claus and talk with the kids, but her excessive comments only upset the local parents and children.
In Lima, Sam and Tina run into Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter), who uses mistletoe to force them to kiss her. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester overhears Tina criticizing how much she lets Becky get away with, and agrees that she's right. After reprimanding Becky for her actions, Sue announces that she'll be judging the tree decorating contest and is planning on ranking the glee club last. Nevertheless, New Directions decorates their trees while singing "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", and Sue is forced to admit that they did a good job. The glee club then gathers in the auditorium, where Marley, Tina and Unique perform "Mary's Boy Child" for the role of Virgin Mary, and Marley notices Kitty's strange reaction to their performance.
Meanwhile, back in New York, Rachel, Kurt and Santana are approached by the drunk Santa's replacement, Cody Tolentino (Bryce Johnson), an attractive man who catches Kurt's attention. Cody convinces the trio to welcome him into the loft so they can bond ahead of their period together, and Cody conducts Rachel, Kurt and Santana in a more familiar drunken rendition of "Christmas Don't Be Late". When Rachel and Santana wake up the following day, they find Kurt bound and gagged and learn that Cody is a con artist who has robbed them.
Back in Lima, Will and Beiste announce the cast list for the living nativity, with Marley as Virgin Mary. Kitty scoffs at the decision, and when Marley questions her, Kitty admits she feels she's not worthy of playing Virgin Mary. Marley shares with the rest of the glee club that she feels Kitty deserves the role, and they come up with an scheme to convince her to do it. The next day, Will and Beiste invite Kitty to watch the rehearsals of their living nativity performance, in which Unique replaces Marley as Virgin Mary and performs a highly offensive rendition of "Love Child". Kitty is appalled and volunteers for the role, only to find out the performance was meant to push her into accepting it.
After Sue announces that the glee club has won the decorating contest, Sam and Tina notice that Becky is depressed for losing, especially after Sue criticizes her entry, and decide to give her the angel sculpture in order to cheer her up, in addition to offering her a role in the nativity scene portraying Baby Jesus.
In New York, Rachel apologizes for what happened with Cody and announces she got the trio another gig as "living mannequins" in a clothing store. In Lima, New Directions and Becky gather to perform the living nativity before a group of children. Both sides sing "Away in a Manger", and the episode ends.
